Elaine O’Neil specializes in custom commissions of house portraits, wedding and graduation scenes, and happy memories or vacations. She starts by discussing with her clients the subject matter. If, for example, it is a home portrait, she either comes to the location to take photographs, or the client provides the photos to her. Important details such as pets (color and breed) and people (hair color, activity), specific plantings, time of year, sporting equipment (tennis rackets, bicycles) gardens, and pools, are discussed and can be included in the piece.
Elaine uses a commission form that has various questions to help her clients consider important details such as favorite colors, or those colors to avoid, background scenes or iconic structures. If the client wishes, she draws a rough sketch to be sure the composition is pleasing and to be certain the client and artist feel they are “on the same page”. When the client accepts the sketch, a 50% deposit is requested. At this point she begins to pull fabric colors and textures together from her vast collection and begins creating the artwork. Upon completion the final balance is due.
Custom commission sizes start at 24x30”. Although any size dimension can be accommodated, an ideal size is a 30x40” piece. This size allows for a great amount of detail. The prices range from $550 to $1500 depending on the size and intricacy of detail. All prices include framing and plexi-glass (or glass). The time frame for completion of custom artwork ranges from 4-6 weeks.
